Why Aquinas?

Thomas Aquinas’ work on the Passions of the Soul offers one of the most in-depth treatment of the role of emotions in western medieval history. Is it, however, representative of what medieval people thought about their feelings?

Why Aquinas?

"St Thomas Aquinas" by Carlo Crivelli (circa 1435 –1495) The National Gallery, London. Licensed under Public domain via Wikimedia Commons.

This project brings together a group of scholars to consider the issue of the potential uses and possible abuses of Thomas Aquinas’ thought in the history of emotions. We ask what Aquinas actually said about emotions/passions? We consider the context in which he said it? And, most importantly, we ask whether it can be used to describe a definitively medieval approach to the issue of how we feel the feelings that we do.
