Please note that this scheme is now closed.

Guidelines

The purpose of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre for the History of Emotions (CHE) Major Conference Panel Travel Bursary Scheme is to foster international collaboration and to promote the research of the Centre at major conferences within Australia and internationally through conference panels. Panels will be convened by a current or former CHE member and will present on topics to do with emotions and affects relating to Europe within the period 1100-1800, or directly related to the Shaping the Modern Program. The bursaries are available to eligible Australian and international panel presenters. The amount of funding is limited and the number of bursaries funded will be determined by a selection committee.

Eligibility and Requirements:
  • The panel must be convened by someone who holds (or has held) a formal role within CHE (e.g. Chief Investigator (CI), Senior/Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Associate Investigator (AI) in any year(s) from 2011 to the present day, CHE honours or postgraduate candidate (current or graduated), completed CHE Postdoctoral Research Fellow).
  • While they may be convenors of panels, CHE CIs and Senior/Postdoctoral Research Fellows who have a current annual CHE research budget are not eligible to receive these bursaries. Applications are welcomed on behalf of all other Australian and international panelists, regardless of formal affiliation with CHE.
  • Applications for travel bursaries are especially encouraged for the following: current and former CHE International Visitors, CHE Early Career International Research Visitors and CHE Distinguished International Visitors.
  • Bursary recipients must:
    • present on a topic to do with emotions and affects relating to Europe within the period 1100-1800, or directly related to the Shaping the Modern Program;
    • acknowledge CHE wherever possible, using the text ‘This panel is sponsored by the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions (Europe 1100-1800)’, on their abstract, on any visual presentations and on the conference program. Include the use of the CHE, ARC and your university’s logos on any powerpoint or other visual presentations;
    • acknowledge CHE in any resulting publication, using the form of words required by the Australian Research Council; and
    • contribute to the CHE Histories of Emotion blog after the conference.
Process:

There will be two application rounds per year, usually in March and September. Applications may be made retrospectively, e.g. where the call for papers opens and closes between application rounds. Applications are to be made by the CHE member convening the panel on behalf of all of the panelists seeking bursaries, including the following information for consideration:

  1. Convenor’s name.
  2. Convenor’s current or former formal role within the Centre.
  3. Convenor’s contact details.
  4. Convenor’s institutional affiliation (or advise if an independent scholar).
  5. Name, dates and location of the conference (please provide a conference web address if one is currently available).
  6. Proposed title for the panel.
  7. Names of all panelists.

Please provide the following information for each eligible panelist seeking a bursary:

  • Panelist’s full name.
  • For CHE members: Current or former formal role within the Centre (e.g. Honours or Postgraduate student or graduate, current Associate Investigator (AI), honorary (former) AI or honorary Postdoctoral Research Fellow, ECR International Visitor, Distinguished International Visitor).
  • For non-CHE members: Please provide details of research conducted, papers presented and/or publications produced on the history of emotions.
  • Contact details.
  • Name of institutional affiliation (or advise if an independent scholar).
  • Name, dates and location of the conference (please provide a conference web address if one is currently available).
  • Title and abstract of the paper to be presented at the conference, and either:
    1. notification from the conference organisers of acceptance of the paper; or
    2. the closing date for the call for papers if acceptance has not yet been received. Please note that a CHE bursary can be approved in principle, subject to acceptance of the paper subsequently being received. No payments will be made until confirmation of acceptance has been received.
  • A budget/quote outlining the cost of attendance at the conference, itemising:
    1. travel;
    2. conference registration;
    3. accommodation; and
    4. living expenses.
  • Advice from the panelist whether or not they have access to other sources of funding to attend this conference, advising the source and amount.
  • For current postgraduate students, please provide a brief statement about how participation at the conference will benefit their CHE-related research, and a statement of support for their attendance from the principal supervisor.
  • Submission:

Applications must be submitted by the panel convenor to the Centre Manager, Tanya Tuffrey: tanya.tuffrey@uwa.edu.au. Each panel member’s submission must be in a single document in pdf format.

Application closing dates:

  • 29 March 2016; or
  • 15 September 2016

NOTE: CHE may not be able to offer a bursary to every eligible applicant. In the event that there are more eligible applicants than can be supported, the selection committee will rank candidates according to relevance of the topic, distance travelled, financial need, current employment status and access to other sources of funding. It is anticipated that no more than three bursaries would be offered for each panel.

Payment:
  • Bursaries will be awarded to individual panelists rather than to the panel as a whole.
  • Notification of the outcome of the bursary application will be made by the Centre Manager to the convenor and to the successful panelist(s).
  • Any travel (flights, accommodation, etc.) approved for funding will be organised and paid for by the National Administrative Officer via The University of Western Australia. Further details will be provided to successful panelists about the mechanism for all other payments.
