Postgraduate Scholarships and Top-up Scholarships

To help provide the best research training for Australia's forthcoming generation of humanities scholars, the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions (CHE) offers scholarships to PhD students attached to our five node universities, or the Australian university of a supervising Associate Investigator, either as full scholarships, or as top-up scholarships.

PhD Full Scholarships

PhD Full Scholarships are offered to commencing PhD students attached to our five node universities, or the Australian university of an eligible CHE supervisor. The scholarship amount for full-time scholars is up to $26,000 per year for three years, plus an additional up to $13,500 over the three years which is available for research-related travel and associated accommodation and living expenses.

Essential criteria:
  • Have attained PhD candidature status at one of the Centre’s five node universities, i.e. The Universities of Adelaide, Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney and Western Australia.
  • One of your principal supervisors must be a CHE Chief Investigator,  Associate Investigator or Full-Term Research Fellow within the Centre.
  • Your research topic must deal with emotions and affects relating to Europe (1100-1800), or be directly related to the Shaping the Modern Program.
  • You must have full-time status as a postgraduate student. 
Desirable criteria:
  • Have presented at a conference or similar on the History of Emotions.
  • Have produced a substantive piece of writing, e.g. research proposal, conference paper, to do with the History of Emotions.

PhD Top-Up Scholarships

Top-Up Scholarships are available to to PhD students attached to our five node universities, or the Australian university of an eligible CHE supervisor. The top-up scholarship amount for full-time scholars is up to $5000 per year for three years, plus an additional up to $13,500 pro rata over a maximum of three years which is available for research-related travel and associated accommodation and living expenses. 
Note: Part-time scholars may be eligible to apply for a travel award.

Essential criteria:
  • Have attained PhD candidature status at one of our five node universities, i.e. the Universities of Western Australia, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney or Queensland, or at the Australian university of an eligible supervising CHE Associate Investigator (AI), Honorary AI, or Honorary Research Fellow.
  • Your research normally needs to be supervised (principal, joint or associate) at a minimum of 20% by a CHE Chief Investigator (CI), Senior Research Fellow (SRF), current or Honorary/former CHE Associate Investigator (AI), or Honorary Research Fellow.  In all cases, the CHE supervisor must have the capacity to supervise or co-supervise at their home university; have continuing employment at their home university for the duration of a student’s candidature; and be able to supervise or co-supervise under the terms of their employment.  A full list of AIs is on our website.
  • Your research topic must deal with emotions and affects relating to Europe (1100-1800), or be directly related to the Shaping the Modern Program.

  • Hold an Australian Postgraduate Award or equivalent university scholarship.

  • Travel scholarships

    • Tavel scholarships are available for PhD and Masters (research) students who are studying part-time, while employed elsewhere. 
      PhD students: travel funds are available of up to $13,500 pro rata over a maximum of three years towards research related travel.
    • Masters (research) students who are studying part-time, while employed elsewhere: travel funds are available of up to $6,750 pro rata over a maximum of 18 months towards research related travel.

The University of Queensland PhD Top-Up Scholarships

The UQ Node of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, Europe 1100-1800 (UQ CHE) will be awarding three top-up scholarships to commencing PhD candidates with an interest in pursuing a research project on the role of emotion in any field of English literature or drama between 1500 and 1800.

Applicants must have already been awarded an APA scholarship through the School of English, Media Studies, and Art History (EMSAH) to be eligible for this top-up award. The top-up scholarship amount is $5000 per year for three years, plus an additional $13,500 over three years which is available for research-related travel and associated accommodation and living expenses. The postgraduate degree will be administered and supervised through EMSAH, but co-supervision and research support will be provided by researchers within UQ CHE. Honours, Postgraduate Diploma or MA by Coursework Scholarships

Scholarships are available for Honours, Postgraduate Diploma and MA by coursework students whose research topics deal to some extent with emotions and affects relating to Europe within the period 1100-1800, or are directly related to the Shaping the Modern Program.  The scholarship will enable students to attend local CHE events in their area, and provides a travel bursary to attend one CHE event interstate.   Honours students must be enrolled at an Australian university.  Note: Honours students do not have to be supervised by a CHE supervisor, and they are welcome to apply for a CHE scholarship without being invited.  The scholarship offers varied levels of support to attend local CHE events at their closest node university (at the discretion of the event organiser); and the opportunity to apply to CHE Centre Manager for a bursary to attend one interstate CHE conference or collaboratory relevant to the subject of their dissertation.

Essential Criteria:
  • Student must be enrolled in Honours, P/G Diploma or MA (coursework) at an Australian university.
  • The dissertation research topic must deal to some extent with emotions and affects relating to Europe within the period 1100 -1800, or be directly related to the Shaping the Modern Program.

Other support:

  • Honours, P/G Diploma and MA Coursework students will be listed on the CHE website with their projects;
  • possible supervision by a CHE CI, Associate Investigator (either current or honorary), Senior Research Fellow, or Postdoctoral Research Fellow (either current or honorary) (please note: affiliation with CHE does not depend on this);
  • invitation once a semester to meet with CHE Postgraduate/Honours co-ordinator at the closest CHE node, and other CHE Postgraduate and Honours students;
  • invitations, where relevant, to take part in CHE collaboratories, seminars and discussion days; and
  • occasional invitations to meet with visiting speakers.
