Shakespeare, Authorship, and Emotionality in the Hand D section of Sir Thomas More

Date: Friday, May 31, 2013
Time: 4:00pm
Location: Room 601, Michie Building, The University of Queensland
Presenter: Dr Will Sharpe

This paper will attempt to consider the ways in which an analysis of the affective quality of the writing of the Hand D section of the collaborative manuscript play Sir Thomas More, believed widely to be Shakespeare’s, can be used to substantiate claims for authorship in addition to the more forensic linguistic examinations that have been directed at the scene. Parallels of imagery and ideation have long been used as part of the stylometrist’s toolkit, but this paper will explore the possibility that a language of emotional affect can be established to describe ways in which we perceive Shakespeare’s writing to work.

Will Sharpe received his PhD from The Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham and has since worked at the University of Leeds where he completed postdoctoral work on the Cambridge Complete Works of Ben Jonson. He is one of the General Editors of the forthcoming RSC/Palgrave Collaborative Plays by Shakespeare and Others, as well as a Chief Associate Editor of the RSC Shakespeare individual volumes series, for which he co edited Cymbeline with Jonathan Bate. He is one of the General Editors of Digital Renaissance Editions, and is currently preparing commentaries on Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing and Henry VIII for the New Oxford Shakespeare.

The Early Modern Literature Forum is an opportunity for those working on English and European literature and drama, 1500-1800 (or in related fields, such as history, philosophy, music, or the history of art) to share research and engage in discussion about texts and issues of common interest. Regular fortnightly meetings will take place on Fridays at 4:00pm in Room 202A of the Learning and Innovation Building on the UQ St Lucia campus.
